Europeana Newspaper Browser update

The work of The European Library in developing an interface for the Europeana Newspapers Project continues to move forward. In terms of the interface, The European Library has now received and published content from 8 of the libraries involved in the project- a full list is available below.  Much more content is still to be ingested and added.

The prototype interface has undergone usability testing and the external team doing the testing will report back in early May. The European Library will then start working adopting their recommendations, and also incorporating some other features such as the ability to search over article-level records, and to search via named entities (eg., persons or places) identified in the digitised text of the newspapers.

The European Library is also discussing with Europeana the best way to expose the metadata in the Europeana.eu portal; at the first instance metadata relating to each newspaper issue will be made available to Europeana. The European Library and Europeana are also exploring how the scanned newspapers images for each issue can also be made available in the Europeana portal. More information will be shared as these investigations continue.
