Europeana Newspapers succesfully completes its first year with the expansion of its network.

The Europeana Newspapers project has completed its first year successfully. The consortium of 18 European partner institutions covers a broad range of data – European newspapers from the 17th to 20th Century in 20 different languages. The selection of newspapers was made by the participating libraries taking into account the quality of the digitised material, the requirements of users and copyright conditions.

For all aggregated data in the project, metadata will be created, indexed and made available via a content browser. For the 10 million newspaper pages to be processed, which will be made available to Europeana, full text is created and indexed. In the first year, the OCR processing for nearly two million newspaper pages was completed. Three tools to support highly standardised data creation, data controlling and data delivery within the project data have been developed.

Moreover a survey carried out in the project on the extent of newspaper digitisation in European libraries, helped to select eleven associate partners. In early April, the Associated Partnership Agreements were signed by the following libraries:

  • National Library of Czech Republic
  • National Library of Wales
  • National and University Library Ljubljana, Slovenia
  • National Library of Portugal
  • National and University Library of Iceland
  • National Library of Spain
  • National and University Library Zagreb, Croatia
  • National Library of Belgium
  • St. Cyril and Methodius National Library, Bulgaria
  • National Library of Luxembourg
  • Lucian Blaga Central University Library, Romania
